Tim Cook Responds to Factory Worker Mistreatment Allegations

Yesterday, New York Times in a lengthy article titled "iEconomy - In China, Human Costs Are Built Into an iPad" a followup to their earlier article about "Why Apple's iPhone was made in China", attacked Apple for not doing enough to improve living conditions for workers at their suppliers factories.

The New York Times recounts an incident from May last year where an explosion in Foxconn's factory killed 2 workers.

The article goes on to quote a former Foxconn manager:

“Apple never cared about anything other than increasing product quality and decreasing production cost,”  [..]

[..] Some former Apple executives say there is an unresolved tension within the company: executives want to improve conditions within factories, but that dedication falters when it conflicts with crucial supplier relationships or the fast delivery of new products.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook responded to the report with an internal email to Apple employees:

As a company and as individuals, we are defined by our values. Unfortunately some people are questioning Apple’s values today, and I’d like to address this with you directly. We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain. Any accident is deeply troubling, and any issue with working conditions is cause for concern. Any suggestion that we don’t care is patently false and offensive to us. As you know better than anyone, accusations like these are contrary to our values. It’s not who we are.

For the many hundreds of you who are based at our suppliers’ manufacturing sites around the world, or spend long stretches working there away from your families, I know you are as outraged by this as I am. For the people who aren’t as close to the supply chain, you have a right to know the facts.

You can read the entire email from Tim Cook by heading over to 9 to 5 Mac.

Earlier in the month, Apple had published their yearly Supplier Responsibility Progress Report, which details the efforts they make in improving worker and factory conditions as well as environmental standards compliance.

Lingual: Jailbreak Tweak Brings Siri Voice Translation to iPhone 4S

As we reported earlier, Mario Hros a.k.a kexik has released a jailbreak tweak called AssistantExtensions, which seems to be the mother of all Siri jailbreak tweaks.

The jailbreak tweak not only allows you to open apps, send tweets, enable/disable Settings toggles, control brightness, respring Springboard etc., it also provides a framework for other developers to create Siri extensions.

Lingual is the first such third-party extension for AssistantExtensions. It allows you to translate phrases or text in to over 30 languages using Siri, which can be very useful while travelling abroad.

After installing the tweak all you need to do is say something like "translate [phrase] to [language]" or "what's [phrase] in [language]" and the tweak will show you the translated text in Siri in that language.

Lingual supports the following languages: Arabic, Czech, Danish, German, French, Spanish, Estonian, Finnish, Dutch, Greek, Hebrew, Haitian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Latvian, Norwegian, Romanian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Slovene, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukranian, Vietnamese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

You can check out the impressive video of Lingual in action below:

Lingual is developed by CodeThemed and is available in Cydia for free.

Now, if someone can figure out a way for Siri to say the translated text in one of those 35 languages, that would make this jailbreak tweak even better.

Still haven't jailbroken your iPhone 4S using Absinthe jailbreak? Maybe it's time to review that decision.

iPhone 5 Is Nearing Production With A Summer 2012 Launch Date?

When the iPhone 4S was initially released numerous people criticized the smartphone for not being the heavily waited upon “iPhone 5” with a larger screen, re-designed body etc. Regardless of the initial criticism of the iPhone 4S, it did not stop people from buying it, as Apple once again topped the charts this year and ended up selling 37 million iPhone 4S’ in Q1. It is no question that the iPhone 4S is a definite upgrade over the iPhone 4, but if you were hoping more significant physical changes to the device you may be in for a treat.

iPhone 5 gearing for production rumour

In a report from 9to5mac apparently the iPhone 5 (the next generation iPhone) is being geared for production. The source of this information supposedly comes from a Foxconn employee who mentioned various sample devices are currently floating around the factory. The employee goes on to saying that while there are numerous prototypes floating around, all of them have some similarities:

4+ inch display (made by LG on at least one of them)No teardrop-shaped devices as were rumored in the lead up to the iPhone 4S. Samples so far have been symmetrical in thickness. Also longer/wider.None of the sample devices have the iPhone 4/4S form factorNone of the devices are final versions

If the report is correct, and the iPhone 5 is gearing up for production, we could very likely see the iPhone 5 released in the Summer of 2012 at the WWDC. Did this article interest you? Do you have any questions or thoughts? If so leave your replies in the comments section below…

British Heart Foundation’s PocketCPR App Provides Real-Time Feedback And Instructions on CPR Using Accelerometer

The British Heart Foundation has released a new app in the App Store called BHF PocketCPR that gives iPhone users a clear step-by-step instructions of how to give a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

In addition to this, the app makes use of iPhone's accelerometer to provide real-time feedback on the CPR so that you perform it at the correct rate and depth.

The BHF PocketCPR includes the following features:

Clear visual and audio step-by-step instructions on Hands-only CPR performance, including initial steps for the Chain of Survival.Precise metronome to pace chest compressions.Accurate ability to detect rate of actual compressions and to state visually and audibly whether to push faster or to push slower.Industry-proven technology to detect the depth of chest compressions.Audio and visual prompts to push harder or to push softer.Feature to detect when chest compressions have stopped and to prompt user to START CPR.Complete Instructions for Use.Ability to capture and email CPR compression data and accelerometer data allowing the user to record the quality of the CPR chest compression training.

You can check out the demo of the app below:

The BHF PocketCPR has been developed by Bio-Detek, a subsidiary of ZOLL Medical Corporation and seems to be a white label version of their PocketCPR app that is also available for free in the App Store with a stamp of approval from British Heart Foundation.

Bio-Detek claims that the technology used in the app is the same as that used in the ZOLL PocketCPR for actual rescue from sudden cardiac arrest.

You can download the app for free from the App Store using this direct iTunes link. It seems to be a very handy app in case of an emergency.

Make Siri Do Almost Anything With AssistantExtensions Cydia Tweak

We’ve already said this before and we’ll say it again. Siri is amazing and is one of the strongest reasons why anyone would want to buy the iPhone 4S. And after the release of the iPhone 4s Jailbreak, Siri has been doing things that it never could before. Take the Sireet Cydia tweak for example, it can be used to tweet with the help of Siri on your iPhone 4S.

AssistantExtension Cydia tweak

This new Cydia tweak, AssistantExtensions, gives Siri much more power than what it has now. It’s not just a tweak, but it is a framework that increases the possibilities of what can be done using Siri. The AssistanExtensions Cydia tweak is based upon MobileSubstrate and can be used to control a lot of things on your iPhone 4S. Here is a list of things that AssistantExtensions Cydia tweak can do out-of-the-box:

System commands: tweet, show tweet, launch apps, set brightness to XX %, restart springboard, generate a random number and more.Toggles: you can literally toggle on/off all the shortcuts found in SBSettings.Chat Bot: You can chat with Siri. To start, just say “Let’s chat” and wait a moment. Loading times will be improved a lot in future releases.

That’s not it. Since this is a MobileSubstrate tweak, hackers and developers can come up with their own extensions for the tweak, which means more commands. There already is a YouTube extension that shows thumbnails of search results via Siri. Another neat aspect to this tweak is that it will also have multi-lingual support in the future, in case you speak a language that Siri can’t understand.

AssistantExtensions How To

This is a serious tweak and will extend Siri’s capabilities much more. And to top it all, the AssistantExtensions tweak is available as a FREE download from the BigBoss repo. So go on, what are you waiting for?

We will have how to guides available for customizing Siri with the AssistantExentsions Cydia tweak in the near future so stay tuned. Until that time please leave any questions or thoughts in the comments section below…

Known as Lingual, this Cydia tweak can translate over 30 languages with the help of Siri. If you wanted to know the translation for a word or phrase, just ask Siri. The Lingual Cydia tweak is a very useful tool for travelers, but of course, you will need a jailbroken iPhone 4S to do this. Or, if you were successful in making Spire work on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, then you’re in luck too. Here’s the complete list of languages supported by this tweak:

ArabicCzech,Danish,German,Estonian,Finnish,French,Dutch,Greek,Hebrew,Haitian,Hungarian,Indonesian,Italian,Japanese,Korean,Lithuanian,Latvian,Norwegian,polish,Portuguese,Romanian,Spanish,Russian,Slovak,Slovene,Swedish,Thai,Turkish,Ukranian,Vietnamese,Simplified and Traditional Chinese

That’s a lot of languages! Send Tweets Natively Via Siri With This Upcoming Cydia Tweak [VIDEO]

Since the iPhone 4S was successfully jailbroken, there have been loads of Cydia tweaks that are associated with Siri. After all, Siri is one of most interesting features on the new iPhone. Sending tweets with the help of Siri is no big deal, we have already told you a nice little method that gets it done. Wouldn’t it be better if this feature was natively integrated in to Siri and you could tweet directly?

That’s what this upcoming Cydia tweak simply called Sireet plans to do, integrate Siri and Twitter. Whenever you want to send out a tweet, launch Siri and use the word ‘tweet’ to get it started. We recently told you certain Siri tweaks that let you launch apps, toggle system settings and more. This tweak will bring one important feature that Apple forgot to add in to Siri, the ability to send tweets.

Apple has stated that Siri is still in beta, so we could see improvements and more features coming as time goes. Even though the company built Twitter in to the new iOS 5, they forget about mixing things up with Siri. But, for now, we have the jailbreak community for that. iOS developer Tyler Nettleton has posted a teaser video of this tweak in action.

The tweak is not finished yet, but a release within this week is what the hacker has stated and yes it will be free. We will let you know as soon as it’s out, until then give us your thoughts on it!

EFF: Sign Petition to Tell the U.S. Copyright Office That Jailbreaking is Not a Crime

iPhone with a 4-inch screen?

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has asked the U.S. Copyright Office to declare that jailbreaking does not violate the DMCA.

In addition to requesting iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in the U.S. to send comments to Copyright Office to convince them to renew and expand the exemptions for jailbreaking, EFF is also encouraging users to sign the petition at jailbreakingisnotacrime.org. The petition states:

You bought it. You own it. Tell the Copyright Office: let me install whatever software I want on my phone, tablet, or video game system.

Back in 2010, EFF had won critical exemption to the DMCA, which made it legal for users  in the US to jailbreak their iPhone.

At that time, Apple had told the U.S. Copyright Office that it believed jailbreaking an iPhone is a violation of the DMCA and infringes on its copyright. Apple also informed the Copyright Office that the exemption request by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was not acceptable as the very act of jailbreaking the iPhone results in copyright infringement.

However, the exemption needs to be renewed otherwise it would expire, which could make jailbreaking your iOS device illegal. Interestingly, it looks like the exemption was only for smartphones, so it did not cover tablets like Apple's iPad. EFF wants to fix that by expanding the exemption to also cover tablets.

So if you're in the U.S. and love jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, then don't waste any time and sign the petition by heading over to jailbreakingisnotacrime.org as there is only 14 days left to sign it.

Jailbreaking Your iPhone May Become Illegal If DMCA Exemption Expires

iPhone with a 4-inch screen?

If you love jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch then you should read this post and take action.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) reports that it has asked the U.S. Copyright Office to declare that jailbreaking does not violate the DMCA.

You may remember that back in 2010, EFF had won critical exemption to the DMCA, which made it legal for users  in the US to jailbreak their iPhone.

Here's how you can help:

The Copyright Office needs to hear from people who depend on the ability to jailbreak to write, use, and/or tinker with independent software (from useful apps to essential security fixes) for smartphones, tablets, and game consoles.

EFF is requesting users to submit comments online at this link. EFF has also provided a list of questions on their website that you should address in the comments.

Please note that comments are due by February 5th at 5PM Eastern time, so don't waste anytime and head over to the link provided above and submit your comments.

Apple Announces New Discount Program For Employees; $500 Off Macs, $250 Off iPads

Apple held a company-wide town hall meeting today for employees to discuss "exciting new things going on at Apple."

9 to 5 Mac reports that during today's town hall meeting, Tim Cook announced that Apple employees will get $500 off on Macs and $250 off on iPads from June this year.

Cook announced that Apple employees will soon be given $500 discounts on purchases of new Macs and $250 discounts on purchases of a new iPad.

The new discount program will officially kickoff at some point during June 2012. A major caveat is that Apple employees may only utilize the opportunity every three years and employees must have been working for Apple for at least 90 days.

9 to 5 Mac reports that the $500 Mac discount is not applicable to Mac Minis. Currently Apple employees are entitled to 25% discount on Macs and we're hearing that the discounts announced today will be on top of the 25% discount.

With more than $97 billion in the bank and posting record revenues and profits last quarter, Apple can afford to be generous to their employees who have worked hard to make it one of the most successful companies in the world.

How To: Make Your Own Siri Conversations On Jailbroken iPhone 4S

Earlier today we told you about a new Cydia tweak for your Jailbroken iPhone 4S dubbed AssistantExtensions. The AssistantExtensions Cydia tweak extends the out-of-the-box Siri functionality and allows developers to easily create custom Siri extensions themselves. One neat thing that the AssistantExtensions Cydia tweak can allow you to do fairly easily, as pointed out by iDB, is create custom Siri conversations.

Make custom Siri conversations

Thus, in this how to guide from iJailbreak.com you will learn how to create custom Siri conversations on your Jailbroken iPhone 4S with the help of the AssistantExtensions Cydia tweak.

Step 1) – The first thing you will need to do is download and install the AssistantExtensions Cydia tweak to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Step 2) – The next thing you will need to do is open TextEdit on Mac OS X, or Notepad on Windows and copy and paste the following into a blank document:

YOUR CUSTOM SIRI QUESTION (MUST BE UPPERCASE)

When you have replaced the example text with your custom Siri conversation you will need to save the file with the extension “.aiml“.

Note: AIML stands for Artificial Intelligence Markup Language and is an XML compliant language.

Step 3) – Once you have saved your custom conversation file you will need to download an iPhone file-system editor program like iExplorer and go into the following directory:

/Library/AssistantExtensions/aiml/

Step 4) – When you are in the directory shown above you simply must drop you .aiml custom conversation file into the directory and wait for it to transfer.

Step 5) – Now simply activate Siri and speak “Let’s chat”, which will make Siri re-load her aiml directory and active your custom Siri conversation. When Siri finishes re-loading her data you can now begin speaking your custom conversation prompt.

Now that you know how to create a basic Siri conversation I suggest checking out some of the pre-made .aiml files in the/Library/AssistantExtensions/aiml/ directory to learn how to do more advanced things with Siri. We will how more how to guides available for customizing Siri with the AssistantExtensions Cydia tweak in the near future. Until that time please stay tuned and leave your custom Siri conversations in the comments section below…

Lorem: Clear Notifications With a Swipe Using This Jailbreak Tweak

Lorem is a must-have jailbreak tweak for Notification Center.

If you don't like the idea of tapping on the x button and then tapping on the Clear button, check out Lorem, it allows you to clear a notification from Notification Center with just a swipe

After installing Lorem - all you need to do is drag or swipe in any direction on the notification to clear it. We found it  a lot more intuitive and faster to clear notifications using Lorem.

Lorem is disabled by default, so you need to first enable it via the Settings app (Settings -> Lorem -> Enabled On/Off toggle)

The jailbreak tweak works quite well in IntelliScreenX and should work well with LockInfo as well.

You can check out the video of the jailbreak tweak below:

Lorem is developer by iStopped and available for free in Cydia.

If you liked Lorem then you may also like ipsum - a jailbreak tweak that allows you to get rid of notifications from the lock screen by swiping.

More Word That Microsoft Wants To Bring Xbox Live Games To Other Devices

As we mentioned earlier this month, Microsoft is looking to be bringing their Xbox Live Games to other devices, other than their Windows Phone 7. According to a new article by Forbes, a Microsoft spokesman state that:

While the Xbox Live experiences and games always work best on the Windows platform, we understand that some Xbox fans may be using other types of devices. To satisfy that need, we are working to extend a few of our Xbox experiences and titles to other platforms.

This is just another confirmation that they are working to bring it to other devices. While they never mention a specific platform such as Android or iOS, with the growing market for both platforms, it seems only logical that it will be launched on these.

What Xbox Live Game would you like to see added on Android or iOS? Tell us what you would like to see happen in the comments below.

For anyone out there that codes directly within a command line interface, they know Vim is the go to text editor when it comes to ease of use. Now you can edit those files in one of the world’s most powerful text-editors directly on your iOS device. While I would imagine this is best suited to the iPad’s larger screen, for those quick tweaks on your iPhone or iPod Touch this is still a great resource!

How To: Fix “Error Establishing A Database Connection” When Using Absinthe Jailbreak Tool

Absinthe is the jailbreak tool for untethered jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1. It was only released a few moments ago, and already people are having trouble with installing it. It is currently only available for Mac OS X, but users who have been trying to install Absinthe app have been getting an ‘Error Establishing A Database Connection’ error. This is probably because of too many people using the tool at the moment.

@Planetbeing has just tweeted a solution. To get rid of the error, just go into Settings>General>Network and Turn on VPN on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2. This will give you an error and your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 should reboot. Once the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 has rebooted, launch the Absinthe app again, and it should work this time and reboot again. After the reboot, your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 should be jailbroken and the Absinthe app will be replaced by the Cydia app.

That’s it! Enjoy your jailbroken iPhone 4S and iPad 2!

How To: Jailbreak iPad 2 Untethered On iOS 5.0.1 With CLI [Windows]

The Windows version of the command line interface (CLI) iPad 2 Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak was released today! This means you can now Jailbreak your iPad 2 Untethered on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware on the Windows operating system. Unfortunately, this is not your everyday Jailbreaking solution because it involves typing commands in the Windows Command Prompt. At this time, however, until Absinthe is ported to Windows this is the only iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak solution for the iOS 5.0.1 firmware.

If you are not skilled with the Windows command prompt then you will be glad to know that in this how to from iJailbreak.com, you will learn how to Jailbreak your iPad 2 on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware using CLI on Windows.

Update #1: How To: Jailbreak iPhone 4S Untethered On iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 With CLI [Windows]

Update #2: A GUI version of CLI has been released in the form of Absinthe v0.2 (Click here for a How To guide).

Perquisites: The first thing you need to do before starting this how to is make sure your iPad 2 is backed up. As the Absinthe Jailbreaking tool was just released, there is a good chance that you may experience an error Jailbreaking it. Thus, it is always a good idea to make sure all your content on your iPad 2 is backed up. Additionally, if you iPad 2 has a passcode lock you must disable it, and furthermore you will need to disable any current VPN’s setup on your iPad 2.

Recommendation: It is our personal recommendation that you restore your iPad 2 to factory settings on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware. This will dramatically reduce the chance you have of experiencing an error while Jailbreaking it.

Step 1) - The first thing you will need to do is download the latest version of CLI from the iPhone Dev-Team’s blog (see update 3) by clicking here. Additionally, you can use the direct download link by clicking here if it proves to be more convenient.

Note: Before moving on to step 2 please make sure your iPad 2 is plugged into your computer via your USB cable.

Step 2) - You will need to unzip the cinject_0.4.3 folder into your system directory (C:/).

Step 3) – Now you will need to search for CMD through your start menu, right click on it, and then click the Run as administrator option.

Step 4) – With the Windows command prompt interface now open you will need to type in the following command to get into the proper folder.

CD C:\cinject_0.4.3

iPhone 4S And iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak To Be Integrated Into RedSn0w

Do you not like the new Jailbreaking tool Absinthe? Would you prefer to Jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 Untethered from a familiar Jailbreaking tool like RedSn0w? If so, then you will be glad to know that it has been noted by the iPhone Dev-Team from their official blog, that the A5 Untethered Jailbreak will be integrated into the popular RedSn0w Jailbreaking tool once all the kinks have been worked out of Absinthe.

Once all the bugs in the flow are worked out, we’ll also incorporate it into the redsn0w GUI (but still leave the CLI freely available too). In order to maximize the chances of the jailbreak working for everyone, the redsn0w GUI will use native Apple iTunes libraries — this technique is slightly different than how the Chronic Dev GUI handles communications, and should provide nice combined coverage for all the odd computer configurations out there.

The iPhone Dev-Team have mentioned that when the A5 Untethered exploit is integrated into the RedSn0w GUI (graphical user interface) it will use a slightly different method for communications. The result should be a more stable Jailbreak, because it is using the default Apple iTunes libraries, and will also result in better coverage for all the odd computer configurations out there.

We will keep you updated when the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak is integrated into RedSn0w. Until that time please stay tuned and leave any questions or thoughts in the comments section below…

@pimskeks On Absinthe For Windows: “Just A Few Tests And We’ll Release It”

Yesterday was an amazing day for all the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners around the world. The A5 untethered jailbreak, which was being worked on for quite a while, was finally released to the public. Developed by the Chronic Dev-Team, the jailbreak tool was called Absinthe. However, due to certain difficulties, the tool was only released for Mac OS X users.

Earlier today, the CLI jailbreak tool was released for Windows users to untethered jailbreak the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. It was released by the iPhone Dev-Team and requires you to use the command prompt in Windows to jailbreak your iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Now that’s not something a normal iDevice user would want to try.

We also told you about the recent tweet from @posixninja, which said that Absinthe for Windows will be released soon. Now, there’s another update from the developer who’s actually building the Windows version of Absinthe. If you have been following the whole Absinthe thing, then I’m pretty sure that you must have heard of @pimskeks (Nikias Bassen). He just tweeted that he’s currently running some tests with the tool and that it should be out soon!

So, folks, the wait is almost over! Absinthe for Windows will be released very soon! Could be in a few hours. Who’s waiting to untethered jailbreak their iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on iOS 5 or 5.0.1?

When you click the Jailbreak button your iPad 2 will look like it is being officially restored through iTunes; it should say something along the lines of “restore in progress.”

Step 4) – Once your iPad 2 reboots you can slide-to-unlock it and then on your Springboard (homescreen) you should notice a new Absinthe icon. Tap this Absinthe icon now, the official GreenPois0n website should appear for an instant, and then your iPad 2 will reboot. Upon being rebooted you should notice that Cydia takes the place of the prior Absinthe icon. Congrats! You have just Jailbroken your iPad 2 Untethered running the iOS 5.0.1 firmware with Absinthe.

Troubleshooting:

The Absinthe Jailbreaking tool is extremely new, and thus there is going to be numerous errors people encounter. iJailbreak.com has done its best to reference the most common errors people are experiencing and additionally provide solutions for them.

Tip #1: If you are experiencing “Error establishing connection” this is simply because the servers hosting this Userland Jailbreak is being overloaded with traffic. Your best bet is going to be to keep trying to launch the Absinthe app on your springboard, or simply wait an hour or two and try again. Another solution that has been reported to work for this error is to simply go into the Settings.app > General Tab > Network Tab > VPN Tab and then toggle VPN to the ON position. This will cause an error dialog box to appear where once dismissed will reboot your iPad 2, and in most cases will allow you to use the Absinthe app to finish your Jailbreak.

Tip #2: If you are having troubles getting the Absinthe app to appear on your iPad 2's springboard, or are just having errors in general with Absinthe you can follow Planetbeing’s advice to — Run Absinthe from Terminal by using the cd command to navigate to the directory where Absinthe is located (on your computer) and then type the following ./Absinthe.app/Contents/MacOS/Absinthe (now simply start the Jailbreaking process over again).

Tip #3: If all else fails, try restoring your iPad 2 (if you have not already) to factory settings, restart your computer and switch USB ports.

Hopefully this how to guide has helped you Jailbreak your iPad 2 running the iOS 5.0.1 firmware using Absinthe on Mac OS X. If you have any questions or thoughts related to this tutorial please leave them in the comments section below…

How To: Jailbreak iPhone 4S Untethered On iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 With CLI [Windows]

Earlier today we told you that the command line interface (CLI) version of the iPhone 4S Untethered Jailbreak was released for Windows. While most Jailbreaking solutions onwards from 2010 have generally been released with a GUI (graphical user interface), the initial release of the Windows A5 Untethered Jailbreak will require you to use the Windows command prompt. This is partly because the iPhone 4S Untethered Jailbreak has proved to be one of the most complicated Jailbreaks ever developed, and at this time the Dream Team are still trying to port Absinthe to Windows.

If you are not skilled with the Windows command prompt then you will be glad to know that in this how to guide from iJailbreak.com, you will learn how to Jailbreak your iPhone 4S on the iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1 firmwares (9A405 and 9A406) using CLI on the Windows operating system.

Update #1: How To: Jailbreak iPad 2 Untethered On iOS 5.0.1 With CLI [Windows]

Update #2: A GUI version of CLI has been released in the form of Absinthe v0.2 (Click here for a How To guide).

Perquisites: The very first thing you need to do before starting this how to guide is make sure your iPhone 4S is backed up. As the CLI Jailbreaking tool for Windows was just released, there is a good chance that you may experience an error Jailbreaking it. Thus, it is always a good idea to make sure all your content on your iPhone 4S is backed up. Additionally, if you iPhone 4S has a passcode lock you must disable it, and furthermore you will need to disable any current VPN’s setup on your iPhone 4S.

Recommendation: It is our personal recommendation that you simply restore your iPhone 4S to factory settings on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware (if you do not require an unlock) or the iOS 5.0 firmware (if you do require an unlock). This will dramatically reduce the chance you have of experiencing an error while Jailbreaking it with CLI for Windows.

Step 1: The first thing you will need to do is download the latest version of CLI from the iPhone Dev-Team’s blog (see update 3) by clicking here. Additionally, you can use the direct download link by clicking here if it proves to be more convenient.

Note: Before moving on to step 2 please make sure your iPhone 4S is plugged into your computer via your USB cable.

Step 2: The next you will need to simply unzip the cinject_0.4.3 folder into your system directory (C:/).

Step 3: Now you will need to search for CMD through your start menu, right click on it, and then click the Run as administrator option.

Step 4: With the Windows command prompt interface now open you will need to type in the following command to get into the proper folder.

CD C:\cinject_0.4.3

Step 5: After going into the proper folder through command prompt you will now need to type in another command as shown in the quoted area below.

cinject -i payloads/jailbreak.mobileconfig

Step 6: Once you have typed the above command you will notice an install profile window appears on your iPhone 4S. You will need to simply tap the install button, ignore the password screen and simply tap next button on your iPhone 4S to install this special Jailbreak profile.

Step 7: After the profile has been installed you will need to type in another command into Windows command prompt.

cinject -j payloads

Step 8: You now need to execute yet another command through Windows command prompt.

cinject -w

Step 9: Now go into the Settings.app on your iPhone, into the General Tab, then into the Network Tab, and finally you should see a VPN toggle. You will simply need to toggle VPN to the ON position and then you should notice you receive an error “A configuration error occurred.” Tap the OK button and your iPhone 4S should reboot.

Step 10: Once it has rebooted you will notice Cydia on your SpringBoard (homescreen). This means the Jailbreak worked and you now have a Jailbroken iPhone 4S running the iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1 firmware. Congratulations!

We hope this how to guide has helped you Jailbreak your iPhone 4S running the iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1 firmware using CLI for Windows. If you have any questions or thoughts related to this tutorial leave them in the comments section below…
